Beddington boxer Charlie Edwards won the English flyweight title on Saturday night in just his fifth bout as a professional boxer - and he is already looking at the British title.

The 22-year-old recorded a unanimous points victory over champion and fellow undefeated fighter Louis Norman – claiming a 100-90 99-91 99-92 victory on the judges’ scorecards.

The fight was part of a huge night of boxing at London’s O2 Arena, headlined by heavyweight contender Anthony Joshua, who continued his rapid rise up the boxing ladder with a first round knockout of Scotland’s Gary Cornish.

Edwards' own rise in the sport is just as remarkable and coming just as quick.

He said: “I felt great in the fight with Norman, I love fighting in London and enjoyed it out there.

“I had the best training and preparation going in to the fight – I was in Marbella for three weeks to do some sparring and the help I got out there was brilliant.”

Edwards, who only turned professional earlier this year after an impressive amateur career, was the better boxer from the start.

Raw power: Charlie Edwards beat Louis Norman by an unanimous points decision

“I started really well and dominated Louis Norman. I was quick, hit and move and showed, against an undefeated fighter, what I’m all about. I took the title and I’m really happy with my performance,” he said.

The new champion is not planning to mull over his victory for too long though and now wants to challenge for bigger domestic honours.

He said: “I’m ready to fight again, I’m ready to fight for the British title, which is vacant at the minute and continue my rise through the division.

“I’ve just fought 10 rounds at ease and the more rounds I’m fighting, the better I’m getting. I felt great and could have gone on for longer.

“I think I’ll be back out again in December, probably back at the O2 Arena and hopefully it will be for the British belt.”
