Morden boxer Lenny Daws is using Britain’s latest world champion Tyson Fury as his inspiration ahead of this weekend’s European super light-weight title bout.

Fury was crowned heavyweight champion of the world last weekend following a unanimous points win over Wladimir Klitschko in Dusseldorf.

And Daws, who lives in Carshalton, takes on Spaniard Ruben Nieto for the vacant belt at the Westcroft Leisure Centre in Carshalton on Saturday.

The 36-year-old said: “This is the big one for me, and if I pull it off, we’re still in sight of the world title.

“I cannot consider what I would do if I lose, would it be the end? Would I drop back to domestic level? I don’t know.

“It’s not in my mind that I should be packing up soon, in my mind I have a few years left in me yet.”

He added: “There are some great fights coming up next year, and the chance to get on the card of any Tyson Fury fight would be lovely, that’s a real driver.

“He’s a quality boxer and a real example of what you can achieve.”

Daws’ opponent this weekend comes into the bout on the back of a 16-1-0 record – his only defeat coming against Michele Di Rocco in 2014, who was defending the European belt the Italian had won after beating Daws the previous year.
