Esher head coach Ollie Smith has not ruled out a move for one or two of the players cut adrift from Championship strugglers London Scottish last week.

Exiles director of rugby Simon Amor released James Kellard, Alex Clarke, Ben Lonergan, Marcus Bloomberg and Mungo Strachan and sent Aaron Liffchak out on-loan to Rosslyn Park last week, as the Athletic Ground outfit switch to a full-time training set-up in a bid to spark new life into their campaign.

But Smith insisted he would only bring in new players if Molesey Road’s money men could guarantee the funds were available.

“I might chase up one or two of them, but contrary to what many people think we are not the most well off club,” he said.
“I don’t want to approach a player without being able to deliver what I promise them. It is  up to what the club can give me.

“You make a lot of friends in rugby and I don’t want to upset anyone because there may be a time when I need a favour or two. We shall see.”

Meanwhile, the Molesey Road chief has warned Saturday’s last gasp 29-26 win at struggling Tynedale is the sort of triumph that could make his men National Division One title contenders.

Esher needed a penalty try from the game’s last play to secure a try bonus point victory against a side reduced to 14-men for much of the second half after Matt Outson saw red for the hosts.

A much-changed Esher side had trailed 26-17 until prop David Millard made it a four-point game before Smith’s men made their dominance up front count.

The former Championship club are in a state of transition – having suffered the drop earlier this year – and Smith reckoned if the benefit of the win was not felt this year, it certainly would next.

“To come back and win having been a couple of tries adrift was a huge relief as much as anything and winning like that is only going to stand us in good stead.

“This is all about developing a squad that is good enough to compete in the Championship when we get back up there.

“We might not get there this season, but when we do return we want to be in a position where we do not have to make wholesale changes.”

Esher host Richmond  on Saturday and Smith expects a test.

“They are no mugs – having drawn with Ealing already this season – and they have nothing to lose,” he added.
