In big writing at the top of Sutton & Epsom's website this week are the words 'It doesn't get any more important than this' as they prepare for their crunch promotion play-off.

Sutton finished the London Two South West season in second place thanks to a final game 34-5 win over Effingham & Leatherhead last weekend, and they denied top spot only by Chobham's narrow 20-17 win over Guildford.

It means they now go to London Two South East runners up Charlton Park, who like Sutton accumulated 85 points this season, this weekend in a winner takes all encounter that head coach Jeff Parsons is not playing down the importance of.

"It's bigger than a cup final," he said.

"We don't know much about them having not played them for many years but we will be concentrating on our own game.

"We cannot get too wrapped up in what they are going to bring to the table, if we perform we are good enough to beat anybody in our league or their league.

Your Local Guardian: Austin Sheppard

Austin Sheppard runs clear in the 50-10 win over Old Reigatian two weeks ago - he was also a scorer in last weekend's win over Effingham & Leatherhead

"Training is going to be important this week and then it is down to who deals with the pressure best.

"I am sure they will be as desperate to go up as we are."

He added: "Promotion will be huge. You see so many teams have a bad season and get demoted and they can't bounce back from it. Not many teams go down and get straight back up next year."

Shawn Renwick scored two tries and Austin Sheppard, Mike Cartledge, Jack Wilson and Matt Whittaker one each as they held their nerve at Effingham.

"We probably tried to play a little bit too much in the first half as we were concerned about getting the bonus point win we needed," added Parsons.

"But the second half was a superb performance, especially in the terrible conditions.

"We were looking at the Chobham score once we got into the second half and were hoping Guildford were going to do us a favour.

"But the two best sides are in the top two positions and I think Chobham deserved to get promoted or be in the play-offs and so do we."
