Old Walcountians surged out of the relegation places after a ruthless 32-10 demolition of bottom side Kingston at Clock House.

The Surrey One match was by no means one-sided as Walcountians were given a thorough test by a solid Kingston pack, and were behind after 15 minutes when their defence failed to cover a cross-kick which Kingston’s blind-side flanker Seymour picked up to wrong-foot the remaining Walcountians defenders and touch down for a converted try.

Walcountians’ fightback began in the 15 minutes before the break where they began to win and use loose ball won through the sterling efforts of hooker Remy Claustres, lock Simon Fowler and number eight Gerry Connor.

Firstly, fly-half Fred South banged over a penalty in the 26th minute to reduce the visitors’ lead.

Then, in the 32nd minute, lock Dom Bell charged down an attempted clearance kick and won the race to touch the ball down to give the Old Boys the lead.

Kingston regained the lead in the 35th minute with a penalty, but Walcountians responded with two spectacular tries in the remaining minutes before the break.

The first came from Fred South who brilliantly swerved his way past a stunned Kingston defence in the 37th minute.

And in the last minute of the first half, centre Callum Stone superbly anticipated a defensive clearance from full-back Ollie Beales and outpaced the opposition to run in a try.

Kingston, who like Walcountians, needed the points to avoid relegation, continued to extend Walcountians in the second half in the set pieces.

However, when Walcountians threw on fresh legs in the shape of speedy winger Ryan McGibbon, centre Chris Drinkwater who has been the Old Boys most prolific try scorer over the past decade and tough Kiwi prop Matt Ratana, they began to regain the initiative.

Try: Fly-half Freddy South bursts through the Kingston line on the way to a fine individual score

A solid Walcountians defence, in which full-back Ollie Beales was outstanding, kept the visitors at bay and, as the final quarter approached, they sealed victory as slippery scrum-half Will Diamond broke from a ruck set up by Matt Ratana and Simon Fowler and swerved past two Kingston defenders to touch down under the posts. Callum stone added the conversion to create a 15-point gap.

Walcountians were far from finished and, three minutes from full time, Callum Stone ran in his second try of the day to finish a three-quarter move and converted his own try.

This weekend, Walcountians face a tough challenge when they take on promotion contenders Old Tonbridgians (kick-off is at 2.30pm).
