Ollie Stedman was in a hurry on Sunday, and playing for London Welsh at Old Deer Park only helped step up the pace.

The former England U20s international, recalled from a brief loan spell at Rosslyn Park, came off the bench to score two tries in a 42-18 Championship triumph over Moseley on Sunday.

It took his Welsh try tally to eight in 18 appearances before Stedman hot-footed it to Twickenham to watch England beat Wales in the Six Nations.

And he is hoping he has done enough to persuade head coach Justin Burnell to start him at Cornish Pirates on Sunday.

“It was good to get my hands on the ball, get back in the side and make a positive contribution,” he said.

“We’ve signed a few new boys and everyone is competing really hard.

“If you have a bad game you’re out pretty much – it’s pretty simple.”

Welsh’s win over Moseley was their third straight bonus point victory, a run yielding 17 tries in all and, with five games of the regular season to go, Welsh are timing their run of form to perfection.

“When the summer starts coming you can play a lot more rugby, and it tends to be a more exciting game to watch,” said Stedman, who joined Welsh last year from Newcastle Falcons.

“We’ve got to tighten up the errors in defence, but keep scoring the points.

“In hot weather and on a firm deck, there’s always going to be tries scored, and we outscored them.

“We’re closing in on it, but we’re still trying to pace ourselves. It is getting towards the business end of the season and we need to keep our form high, keep winning and hopefully it rolls into the play-offs.”
