Former Esher centre Seb Jewell may think he is cursed, but he will be hoping lightning strikes twice for him at Molesey Road tonight.

The 23-year-old returns to his old stomping ground with Championship rivals London Welsh, having come off the bench in Saturday’s 34-23 win against Nottingham.

The former Hampton School student spent three seasons on loan at Esher from Harlequins and London Wasps, but left this summer after securing a permanent switch to Old Deer Park.

He scored against Quins on his full Wasps debut at the Stoop in the Amlin Challenge Cup last season and he is hoping a first Championship try for his new employers won’t make him public enemy number one among the Molesey Road faithful.

“It is going to be quite weird going there because I was involved at Esher so long,” said Jewell.

“It was nice to get one back on Quins when I was at Wasps and, hopefully, I can do the same again for Welsh.

“I’ve already been given a bit of stick when I’ve been back to watch the boys this season, but hopefully I won’t get too much of a hostile response because we did well last season.”

Jewell hasn’t had it all his own way as a professional since leaving school, but, after being through three clubs in four years, is beginning to feel at home.

Although that might not be good news for Exiles head coach Lyn Jones.

“It has been hard because when you are on loan you never quite know where you are and it is very physically demanding,” he added.

“You train all day then go to your loan club to train in the evening and you never quite know who you are going to be playing for at the weekend.

“I’ve learnt a lot from all the coaches I’ve worked with and like to think I am a better player.

“I do think I’m cursed though. Every club I’ve been at, the coach has left or been sacked. Phil Greening signed me for Welsh and he’s already gone, so I’m not sure what’s next.”

Welsh had a brace from number eight Ed Jackson and other tries from Jonathan Mills, Hudson Tonga’uiha and Rob Lewis to thank for Saturday’s win.

Welsh lack the resources of some of the championship’s bigger clubs, but Jewell insisted that has everyone motivated.

“The facilities aren’t the best and the players aren’t on the best money, but everyone has bought into the ethos of the club,” he added.

“Lyn has simplified everything and there is a huge amount of confidence in the squad that we can get to the Premiership.

“We got the bonus point win at the weekend, but we know we’ll lose more than we win if we keep conceding so many.”
