Bees stadium move will be on Welsh terms

London Welsh managing director John Taylor is keen to re-open talks with Brentford about becoming a partner in the project to build a new stadium at Lionel Road.
 

Bees owner Matthew Benham purchased land adjacent to Kew Bridge station last month, with a view to building a new 15,000-seater ground to replace Griffin Park.
 

The Old Deer Park-based Exiles have long been mooted as potential tenants in a ground share arrangement with the League One outfit, with their Richmond home unfit for top-flight rugby.
 

Welsh will play their home games at Oxford United’s Kassam stadium this season, but would still be open to a move closer to home.
 

But Taylor has insisted it would happen on their terms.
 

“We are keen to talk again, but we would want the project  to be a partnership,” he said.
 

“Renting is not the way forward because we do not get revenue from the stadium away from our own matchday gate receipts.
 

“With a new stadium and the proposed conferencing and community facilities there is revenue being generated throughout the week and that is the only way you can survive as a modern rugby club.
 

“It is a project we would want to invest in on out terms.”
