Esher’s stand-in coach Chris Kibble says the remainder of the National League One campaign is all about putting a marker down for next season.

Despite a 41-37 victory at Cinderford on Saturday, where Kibble praised his side’s work ethic but was less enthused about a high count of individual errors, Esher remain third in the table, 15 points off the only promotion spot at the top.

Kibble said: “Promotion is unlikely to happen, so we need to make sure we finish second and put a marker down for next year.

“Winning at Cinderford sends a message, and helps lay a good foundation for us as a team. If we had not beaten them, there would always be a question mark over the fixture for next year.”

Charlie Walker scored an excellent individual try, while Chris Elder bagged a brace in the narrow win.

Kibble said: “We need to keep the players focused for the last few games of the season.”

Meanwhile, Esher chairman Jon Inverdale has confirmed that second row Kris Chesney will face no further investigation following an incident during the Old Albanians clash last month.

The former Saracens star was suspended by the club while it carried out investigations after the incident.

However, after studying video footage extensively, Inverdale said Chesney had no case to answer.

He said: “There is no video evidence that anything untoward took place. There were no witnesses and Kris denies anything happened.

“We have investigated the incident as thoroughly as we can and have decided there is no evidence.”

The 39-year-old was not in the Esher side that won at Cinderford last Saturday as he and second team coach Kibble have taken the role of first team coaches while Ollie Smith and Ricky Nebbett serve bans for verbally abusing a match official last month.
