Craig Chalmers is fondly remembered among Scotland fans for his 33 points in the all-conquering Five Nations Grand Slam side of 1990.

Moreover, in the slam decider at Murrayfield against England, Chalmers’ three penalties sealed a 13-7 Calcutta Cup win over his side’s arch-rivals.

In 60 international appearances, Chalmers would never reach the same heights, making the memory of March 17 all the more sweet – especially as no Scottish side has repeated the feat in 23 years.

“It was good fun and a time I will never forget,” Chalmers said.

“It was the only time I ever beat England at international level.

“We drew in 1989 in my second game at Twickenham, but we won in 1990.

“I think Will Carling, Brian Moore and the like still have nightmares about it, even though they beat us every year for many years after that.

“It was a great day for Scottish rugby and it was the last time the Grand Slam was won, so it is a memory I will always keep in my back pocket.”
