Wimbledon RFC skipper Neil Hallett is concentrating on small steps towards the London Division One South title.

Dons are five points clear at the top of the table, a position they have held for much of the season, with five games remaining.

After defeat to second-placed Chobham two weekends ago ended a run on eight consecutive wins, Dons returned to winning ways on Saturday with a 40-7 win over Twickenham.

Hallett said: “It was important to get back to winning ways, but we have five cup finals between now and the end of the season.

“The title is in our hands and it’s vital don’t let up or slip up, and I cannot see Nick [Easter, head coach] allowing us to do that.

“We cannot afford to look too far ahead, we have to take care of the short-terms goals, starting with Gosport & Fareham on Saturday, and then the long-term goals will take care of themselves.”

The former Esher and Ealing inside centre added: “It is so close at the top of the table that anyone of the top four teams can still win it.

“And we’ve got to play three of the top six, so it is not going to be easy.”

Hallett bagged two tries and five conversions over Twickenham, while Bryan Croke (two), Pete Scott and Neil Brown also went over.
