Hampton School’s first team rugby captain Alexander Lundberg has strengthened his position in the England U18s squad – and top tips from England front row coach Ian Peel will only help.

Lundberg, who is enjoying his inaugural term as Hampton skipper, scored his first try for his country in a recent clash with Northampton Saints U19s.

The former number eight switched from the back to the front row a year ago and it seems the move is paying off  with the help of Peel, who is predicting big things for his protege.

“Alexander is still fairly new to playing prop position at U18,” said the coach, who was part of England’s backroom team for this year’s Six
Nations.

“He was obviously a very talented back row player but in the long term would be seen as a prop.

“He has a bright rugby future ahead of him.”

And Lundberg, who scored his side’s first try against Northampton, admitted he was far from the finished article.

“It was such a buzz to get my first try for England,” he added.

“I  am really happy with  my performance in the game and feel that I am  finding my feet  in the front row, but there’s still lots of work to do.”

* Meanwhile, eight of the school’s rugby players have been selected to represent Middlesex.
Alfie Battle, Joe Burdis, Harvey Paull and Jim Phillipson are in the U16s squad, while  Hugh Browne, Rory Chatterton, Chris Painter and Adam Szczotka got the nod for the U18s.
