1:57pm Thursday 10th March 2011

The prompt actions of an off-duty Beddington PCSO led to the arrest of a 21-year-old man who was wanted by police in connection with an alleged assault.

PCSO Helen McGuire, of Beddington North SNT, was in Middleton Circle, Carshalton, when she spotted the suspect shortly after 6.30pm on Saturday February 26.

Two police colleagues from Wandle Valley SNT were nearby and gave chase.

PC Jeff Turner and PCSO Sarah Lowe pursued the man on foot separately for several minutes with the officers keeping in close radio contact as emergency response officers rushed to the scene.

The chase took place in the roads and gardens around Green Wrythe Lane, Middleton Road, Tweeddale Road and Shaftesbury Road before the officers contained the suspect on the St Helier Open Space where he was discovered hiding in bushes behind a fence by a dog unit about 30 minutes later.

The man was arrested on suspicion of assault at Tesco Express, Woodcote Road, Wallington on August 7, 2010.
