I was horrified to learn that McDonald's has applied for planning permission for a late night, drive-through restaurant in Stafford Road, on the site of the former BP petrol station and McKinnons garage.
This would result in a significant increase in congestion and pollution on what is already a very busy road, quite apart from the noise levels for the poor local residents who would have to put up with disturbances until 1am.
A McDonald's restaurant would increase car-dependency and encourage unhealthy eating through a typically high-fat, low fibre menu. There would also be the risk of an increase in litter.
All this is inconsistent with Sutton Council's environment policy.
There would also be the risk of significant damage to the local economy, as local eating establishments will suffer from the competition of a national chain.
And late-night restaurants of this type are often associated with higher levels of anti-social behaviour.
I would encourage all Wallington residents to object to this planning application by the deadline of June 7.
