We live in a throw away society, but we do not always throw stuff in the right place.
Sutton’s recycling record among flat dwellers is poor, leading to recycled waste being contaminated with general waste and ending up in landfill.
Sutton Council’s response is to burn general waste and worsen air pollution. Fortunately its incinerator plans are up for appeal in October and a new approach will be needed.
What is the alternative? A better way is to bake waste in a huge oven at high temperature without air.
This process releases enough gas to heat it without much air pollution. It is called pyrolisis and we should go for it.
