I write in response to David Murray’s letter (Your Say, October 16).

I am sure that readers will be well aware of the economic situation the Coalition Government inherited in 2010 – an economy that had shrunk by 7.2 per cent, unemployment at depressingly high levels and Government spending that meant we were all collectively borrowing £170bn every year.

Such levels of debt and borrowing were simply unsustainable and, without action, our economy would have been crippled and our children would have been left to clear up the mess. Alastair Darling, the outgoing Labour Chancellor acknowledged this.

We have taken the decisions to clean up this mess and, thanks to these choices, are now beginning to see the economy recover and growing in confidence. The UK is now the fastest growing economy of every other major developed country with more than two-million new private sector jobs created since 2010.

I know that these choices have not been easy for many people and that is why I am committed not just to delivering a stronger economy, but a fairer society too. It is why I have been focused on delivering an £800 tax cut for those on low and middle incomes – now we want to increase that to £1,200.

We are also taking steps to prevent employers abusing zero-hour contracts and to ensure the lowest paid get a pay rise.

I did not enter politics to make cuts, but these decisions are necessary if we are to deliver a stronger economy and a fairer society.
