Ian McGraw (Your Say, October 23) is right about the need for traffic calming in certain roads in Cheam, and I would add that Anne Boleyn’s Walk, which serves two schools, is similarly in need of measures, given that it is a rat run for several different kinds of traffic.
In any logical scheme, this is a road that would be first on the list when traffic calming is planned, yet nothing has been done while nearby lanes have been treated, resulting in a natural knock-on effect.
Despite this, when residents asked for a 20mph zone at a council meeting, they were actually laughed at, and remarks such as “Who would enforce it?” and “The problem with a 20mph limit is that while it does stop some from speeding, it can’t stop them all” were made.
The question and statement beg the responses – who enforces all the other 20mph zones in London?
