Sutton Council see people with garden waste as an easy way to raise money. The justification is that not everyone uses the service.
Does this mean there could be future charges for those who use services such as schools, parks, a library or the recycling centre in the future?
The attempt to charge for the collection service failed a few years ago – remember the green jute sacks that had to be purchased to get entitlement to a collection?
They were given away in the end when that attempt folded.
The frantic advertising would seem to indicate take-up is poor again and those who subscribe will be left with an extra bin which is of no use.
Removing the service will encourage many to put garden waste in brown bins – greatly increasing the cost of this service (extra to collect, increased landfill tax and manpower to check brown bins contents for “unapproved” contents).
