The post office in the Co-operative store in the Roundshaw estate, Wallington, is due to be closed in the coming months (Paralympian estate to lose post office, January 15).

This is both extremely disappointing and worrying as the post office is widely used by many of the approximately 8,000 residents of the Roundshaw estate and Wallington, and as the other nearby post offices of Wallington High Street (WH Smith) and Croydon are regularly very busy.

The Roundshaw estate post office is both convenient and serves the needs of residents.

This supports the previous petition in a 2002 strategy committee meeting in which members expressed their support and which reads as follows: “We as residents of Roundshaw need our post office and chemist. These shops are a necessity, providing essential services to all, particularly those most vulnerable, including the elderly and young mothers.”

As the post office is used by many to pay bills and collect benefit payments, some of which is subsequently spent in the supermarket, the Co-operative may in the long term lose revenue, which could result in further job losses.

Furthermore, the staff will also likely be made redundant.

The Co-operative is proposing customers should take their business to the post office in Stafford Road, however, rumour has it that this post office is also due to be closed, which would then be a major issue for residents of Roundshaw and the area in general.
