Two to three years ago we learned that St Helier Hospital accident and emergency (A&E) and maternity units were threatened with closure in preference to Croydon, St George’s and Kingston.

Because of the enormous protest by the local residents the plan was given a temporary reprieve.

Now, however, there has quietly been some activity at the hospital affecting its A&E. Surreptitiously all references to the A&E have been removed apart from emergencies.

Previously, patients attending St Helier were aware of its location, but now have to find someone to direct them, They are told to follow the signs for the urgent care clinic that has replaced A&E.

MP Tom Brake was approached to make an announcement to clarify what has happened to St Helier A&E because it appears, apart from “emergencies”, it has been closed.

He replied that a final decision would not be taken for about six months.

Is this because the closure of the A&E is a fait accompli and the Government is scared to make an announcement before the general election?

I am concerned that my logic does not tally with the powers that be. If a decision has not yet been taken why has so much money been spent making new signs and information charts throughout the hospital omitting A&E.

We must all be aware of the dangers facing St Helier.

We fought hard previously protesting and signing thousands of petitions.

Closing the A&E downgrades our hospital, which could be the first step leading to its closure or even privatisation.
