The announcement of the threatened super hospital planned for 2020-23 period (Plans leaked, April 16) is a serious matter.

I hope all the candidates in this election will unite as they did in Epsom to demand that the idea is scrapped to reassure local people.

In doing this it might mean we have to say things that cost us votes, but are right for the greater good.

That is why I am prepared to say to Mr Trickey of Chiltern Road (Your Say, April 9) that we cannot wait and do need to resolve the future of the Sutton hospital site by 2018 to put it “beyond use” for acute hospital purposes, so it can never threaten St Helier or Epsom hospitals again.

Furthermore, I have this week launched a draft referendum question that I put to the council at its meeting on Monday night and would want to build all-party support for it if possible.

On top of disposing Sutton Hospital land we need a powerful council-driven “referendum lock” locally agreed to protect St Helier Hospital as the council owns the site. This would be much stronger than any petition from any single candidate.
