I am writing to totally agree with the views expressed about the problems caused by the road modifications in the Sutton station/ Mulgrave Road area in Your Say during the past six weeks.

As has been pointed out, these “improvements” cost a lot of money, our money, and are counter-productive in terms of safety and traffic flow.

Another example, well publicised by the Sutton Guardian was the Hackbridge “experiment”.

I am sure readers can think of other less well known cases.

Both the Gateway and Hackbridge projects would suggest that the common purpose of our planners, engineers and bureaucrats is drifting away from common sense.

The immediate problems caused by this are bad enough, but it must be remembered that these mistakes will have to be corrected in the future with attendant cost and inconvenience to the public.

To prevent further incidents of this kind I would strongly recommend that the issue of accountability be raised with the local authorities with a view to naming and shaming those responsible.

I would also urge readers to send letters to the Sutton Guardian, if possible with photographic evidence of other faulty road engineering projects.

Publicity is often the best way to prevent this kind of bureaucratic sloppiness and keep the local authorities on its toes
