I was appalled to see that Viridor has donated a massive £275,000 to the Liberal Democrats’ favourite church, up to 20 times more than to other less well-off churches nearer their location.

It stinks even more than the landfill site on a hot day.

The company has meanwhile neglected wildlife improvements, which has resulted in the disappearance of several rare species on the incinerator site and its surrounds.

If the company had put anything near that amount into creating the promised wet grasslands and building up the regional park stage by stage, then the lost birds might have thrived and we would be much nearer to the public access that was agreed to happen by 2017.

Eleven local bird species were defined as rare and important in Viridor’s planning applications.

Two varieties have now disappeared from the site (redshank and yellow wagtail), four are dangerously low in numbers and two were predicted to colonise, but did not.

Felling trees – used by rare tree sparrows – two years ago without consultation did not help.

Equally shameful is Sutton Council’s weak stance in enforcing Viridor’s poor management of the site while it has bent over backwards to push through the unwanted and unnecessary incinerator.

Lib Dem councillors have presided over major environmental neglect and eased through a polluting incinerator while their favourite meeting place gets a hefty injection of cash from the developers. Shame on them.
