The election is over. Now we must renew our efforts to save St Helier’s accident and emergency (A&E).
We are told that the A&E and maternity are safe for the next five years. However, we must remember the only A&E the hospital has is for emergencies.
Obviously it is hoped that the community has forgotten the A&E was, surreptitiously, at great cost, removed and replaced by the urgent care centre.
This, of course, is the first step to downgrade St Helier.
It is essential that we take up the fight to have our original A&E restored, giving St Helier the same status as other hospitals such as Kingston, St George’s and Croydon.
Perhaps the MPs for Carshalton, Sutton and Mitcham could liaise to organise a meaningful protest.
This is not a political issue but a community issue and it is very important to act now before it is swept under the carpet.
