I read with horror the story this week of a poor little 12-year-old from St Philomena’s being knocked down in West Street. Her life will never be the same again (Girl hit on crossing, May 14).

I was not surprised, however, as it was an accident waiting to happen.

I am a driver too but am utterly shocked at the mentality of people I see driving down West Street.

Twice in the past fortnight I have seen motorists trying to comply with the 20mph speed limit, only to be unbelievably overtaken by complete idiots who cannot wait.

On Sunday I saw a car overtake another on the crossing.

What stuns me is that when there is a queue, as there always is, of cars at 5pm waiting to reach the roundabout, that drivers race over the crossing on the other side of the road, they do not slowdown and it does not occur to them that someone could be crossing and hidden by the queuing cars. They just could not care less.

Someone said to me once “any idiot can drive a car”. How true.

Sadly before anything is done, someone will get killed first.

Why can we not be proactive instead and do something about it now?
