Your article on the road traffic accident at the junction of Cedar Road and the Brighton Road, just south of Sutton station, illustrates a problem that has concerned me since my election as a Councillor for Sutton South Ward four years ago.

The layout of this junction raises issues concerning road safety.

The markings on the junction for traffic travelling north in Brighton Road and turning right into Cedar Road lead the cars to a position where they are slightly misaligned with the junction.

The layout in front of Sutherland House reduces visibility and the cars travelling south in the Brighton Road down an incline to the junction often turn at some speed into Cedar Road, due to the way the turning is laid out.

I am pleased that one of the proposals in the "Sutton Gateway" project, now subject to consultation, will be the re-design of the junction.

The proposed re-design will improve visibility for vehicles turning in and out of Cedar Road, slow speeds for traffic turning left into Cedar Road, reduce crossing distances for pedestrians and improve the visibility of approaching cars.

The project also includes the replacement of the nearby pedestrian crossing, crossing Brighton Road, with a "countdown" crossing, and plans for later this year include a raised zebra crossing and road narrowing a little way down Cedar Road to improve pedestrian safety and reduce speeding in the road.

Councillor Richard Clifton; Sutton Council, Sutton South ward
